What Oil to Use for a 1967 RS Camaro

Though it may be tough to get GM to admit it, the Camaro's launch in 1967 was arguably a direct response to the overwhelming success of the Ford Mustang. The 1967 Camaro had an optional Rally Sport Package -- better known as the RS -- that added a blacked-out grille, hide-away headlights, unique taillights and "RS" badges. The RS Package was available with a range of V-6 and V-8 engines. Buyers could even opt for both the RS and SS packages to get all the visual goodies and the 375-horsepower, 396-cubic-inch V-8. Regardless of the engine in your Camaro RS, Chevrolet had specific oil weight requirements that depended on the outside temperature.

Oil Weights

  • In temperatures of 40 degrees F and above, Chevrolet states that straight 30W engine oil is acceptable in the 1967 Camaro RS. In temperatures of 20 degrees F and up, you can use 20W-20, 20W-40 or 20W-50 engine oil. In temperatures of 0 degrees F and above, 10W-30 and 10W-40 is an acceptable weight of engine oil. Between 0 degrees F and 60 degrees F, straight 10W engine oil is acceptable. In temperatures of 60 degrees and below, you can use 5W-30. When the temperature is 20 degrees F and below, you can use 5W20. Chevrolet recommends using only engine oil with the API starburst that states it is acceptable for gasoline engines.
