Canyon Star 3920 Class A Toy Hauler - Road Test

The Canyon Star is Newmar’s premiere gasoline-powered Class A motorhome. Available in a wide variety of floor plans (including a handicapped-accessible unit designed for ease of use with a wheelchair), it matches Newmar’s reputation for high quality with options that are bound to please any prospective owner. One popular floor plan is the Canyon Star 3920, a class A toy hauler with a rear garage. In fact, the 3920 is so popular that one out of three Canyon Stars are ordered in this floor plan.
  |   newmars Star Toy Hauler rear Three Quarter The toy hauler market is one of the growth sectors in the RV market. ATVs, golf carts, and motorcycles no longer have to be hauled in a trailer. With a toy hauler, you can store them in the back of the motorhome in an enclosed garage. The garage also converts into a handy living area with the comforts of home that you won’t find in your traditional home garage. In fact, a large number of RVers are buying toy haulers and don’t even own any of the aforementioned vehicles. A toy hauler’s garage space can be used as additional sleeping and entertaining space or even as a hobby area. The Canyon Star is also available with an optional half-bath for the garage area, effectively turning this floor plan into a two-bedroom motorhome. Exterior
Our Canyon Star was finished in the Cinnabark paint scheme with a front paint protection film to protect it from stone chips. Polished aluminum wheel rims are clearcoated to retain their shine and make them easy to keep clean. An optional WeatherPro power awning provides plenty of shade at the touch of a button and a 32-inch exterior LCD TV and CD player are fitted into the sidewall, handling entertainment needs when enjoying the great outdoors. Dual slide-outs are fitted with enclosed slide toppers for protection. The heated power mirrors and one-piece windshield offer excellent visibility when driving or just enjoying the view.
  |   A second entry door serves the garage area to prevent having to walk through the main living area when accessing the garage. Living Area
The Seaglass interior décor with Sienna Maple glazed cabinet doors gives a nice upscale look to the interior while recessed halogen ceiling lights provide plenty of illumination. A pair of 13,500 BTU low-profile air conditioners with heat pumps augments the propane furnace for keeping the interior warm or cool and a third unit is located in the garage area with its own thermostat. The 10-gallon hot-water heater can be powered by LP gas or electricity.   |   The main slide-out offers a 74-inch Flexsteel UltraLux couch and a booth dinette area, both of which convert into additional sleeping space. The large drawers beneath the dinette benches offer plenty of storage space for large or bulky items. The Flexsteel sofa bed is fitted with UltraLux leather upholstery and can easily sleep two adults. With the queen bed in the bedroom and the pair of large beds in the garage space, it’s easy to sleep seven adults comfortably in the Canyon Star. The dinette booth also makes into a bed, although the length is better suited for younger family members. Galley storage space is plentiful. Large drawers beneath the booth dinette can handle the largest items while a handy pullout pantry is perfect for dry goods. An 8-cubic-foot Norcold refrigerator and convection microwave oven are finished in black and complement the gray Corian countertop and ceramic tile backsplash. All four of the Canyon Star’s Sony LCD TVs are fed by DVD players, an off-air antenna, a satellite dish, or any campground cable TV connection. For those who prefer a mid-ship TV location another option would replace the pantry with a mid-ship dry bar and LCD TV. A central vacuum system is provided to make quick work of any clean-up chores. The bathroom is equipped with an Aqua Magic Plus china bowl toilet with foot flush, a rectangular shower stall with sliding glass doors, and a porcelain sink recessed beneath a Corian topped vanity. An overhead skylight provides warm, ambient lighting and the medicine cabinet is equipped with three-way folding mirrors. The bedroom is well appointed with a 60x80 full queen bed, which can be raised and is supported by gas struts to gain access to additional under-bed storage. A 32-inch Sony LCD TV and DVD player are mounted in the cabinetry opposite the bed and are flanked by a pair of wardrobe closets. Storage drawers and a Corian dresser top complete this area.
  |   The bedroom slide contains a 60x80 queen bed and additional cabinetry. A wooden door allows access to the garage area. Cockpit Area
The cockpit area is laid out with convenience in mind. Light switches and controls for the heated power mirrors and the leveling jacks are conveniently placed at the driver’s left hand. The center console contains the heating and air conditioning controls, the AM/FM radio and CD player, and the monitor for the rear camera. A cabinet located above the entry door contains controls for the main slide-out and the 600-watt inverter that powers the entertainment system and the digital tank monitoring system. This area also contains the remote panel for the Precision Circuits energy management system that manages loads to prevent the pedestal breaker from tripping when using marginal shore power.   |   The Canyon Star’s dash assembly is well laid out, with all controls within easy reach. Garage Area
Of course, the real centerpiece of this motorhome is its garage area. The garage is a true multi-purpose room. Transporting ATVs, motorcycles, golf carts, side-by-sides, or any other sporting gear is easy. The counterbalanced fold-down ramp can easily be lowered by one person and is rated for 2,500 pounds. A series of tracks mounted in the floor accept a number of industry standard tie-down devices to prevent your cargo from moving around during transit. Non-slip rubber diamond plate flooring provides good traction, even when wet. The garage can be accessed from the main living area as well as from a second curbside entry door.
  |   The double bunk beds in the garage area are electrically raised to the ceiling to offer plenty of storage room for toys. Once the cargo is unloaded, the garage is easily converted to a sitting area. The two bunks are stored near the ceiling during travel or when storing cargo. The electric lift mechanism can lower both bunks or just the lower one. The lower bunk can be made into a large double bed or the backrests can be raised to provide comfortable bench seating in either direction. The forward-facing bench faces another 32-inch Sony LCD TV while the rear bench faces the open area to the rear of the RV. A full-width black sunscreen can be pulled down to fully enclose this area while still allowing adequate ventilation and visibility. Lowering the upper bunk provides additional sleeping space and is equipped with a removable hook ladder for easy access. Windows at various levels can be opened to provide ventilation and are equipped with black vinyl covers for a light-tight environment when desired. A large area rug turns the utility flooring into a comfortable living area.   |   With the upper bunk bed held in the stored position, the lower bunk bed converts into two comfortable bench seats. One bunk faces the rear of the motorhome while the other faces forward, to a 32-inch Sony LCD TV and DVD player. Windows at various heights can be covered with room-darkening black vinyl shades if desired.
Overall Impression
The Canyon Star was a comfort to drive and any large family will enjoy riding in this motorhome. The 362-horsepower Ford V-10 easily brought us up to speed, and the 26,000-pound GVWR chassis handled well. The 50-degree wheel cut and 266-inch wheelbase made maneuvering down narrow gravel lanes an easy task. The Canyon Star is built with typical Newmar quality, and anyone looking for a Class A toy hauler would do well to take a hard look at this upscale toy hauler. Every Newmar is built per customer specifications, so many times you will be able to add things that aren’t on the scheduled options list or be able to add some custom changes to your cabinetry or décor if within reason. In fact, this particular RV was equipped with washer and dryer prep for a combo unit in the garage area. Between the double garage bunks, the queen bed, the sofa couch, and the dinette, it’s possible to find sleeping space for even the largest group of travelers. Four Sony 32-inch LCD TVs and DVD players provide plenty of entertainment options, while the rear garage makes a great place to kick back and relax after a hard day of off-road driving. The combination of all these features in an attractive, well-built motorhome easily places the Canyon Star at the top of the toy hauler list.   |   newmars Star Toy Hauler floor Plan AT A GLANCE
