Auto body repair & detailing: bare metal hood, etch primer, 65 chevy

Question
I'm trying to remove spider surface rust on my 65 chevy panel hood so far
have removed the original paint and grinding/sanding down rust to shiny
metal.  I live near the ocean in a salty wet climate. (Hawaii)  I'm going to use
varying grits of paper to make the steel as smooth as possible.  Once i've
gotten to the desired state I've heard every thing from glasurite, epoxy primer,
self etching, etc.  I don't want to redo it needs to be right the first time with
best products and techniques available.

Aloha,

Greg

Answer
Etch primer works good. It's the clear coat you want to be good. Do not skimp on materials in your climate. The clear protects the paint from the sun, once that oxidizes, it starts to go away. The paint actually does very little. With no clear, it will wash away. Buy good clear!!
I thought I answered your question pretty well. If you had a clue as to what you were doing, you would know how much primer to use. You only need enough to cover the metal. The you spray a couple good coats of primer surfacer (glasurite if you choose, I use nothing but Dupont) If you surface if rough, then you might need more coats of primer surfacer. It sounds to me like you are about to waste a lot of money because you don't have a clue. You can take your negative feedback and stickit. I don't have time for this nonsense, I just volunteer.
