Car Stereos: car audio problem, audio amps, scion xb

Question
hello i have a 2005 scion xb. i have two jl audio amps a 500/1 running to my W6 sub and a 300/4 running my speakers.  i also a some kind of capacitor linked into them.
a while back i started having a problem with my speakers losing audio but the sub stayed strong.  now its always like this instead of just sometimes.  i would have to crank the stereo sound and the EQ all the way up just to get any kind of audio out of the speakers, but then id have to turn the sub way down so it didn't blow it.  my guess is the amp to the speakers is bad.
but the other problem i started having when this occurred is it would completely drain my battery over night.  if i disconnect the audio system the battery is fine, but if i leave it connected over night it drains the battery completely.  please help me figure out what the heck is going on.

Answer
Hi Ryan,

The first thing to do is to find your electrical leak.  If it's a bad/corroded connection, it could be a fire hazard.  Unfortunately, this can be a very timely process.  You'll need to inspect all of the power/ground lines right from the battery all the way to your devices.  If they all check out, you'll have to get a multimeter and test to see how much power is being drawn by the various devices when they're supposed to be off.  You could have a bad amp that's responsible for all of your problems.

Also make sure that your remote wire isn't touching the power wire, which would keep the amplifier(s) on when the car is off.

In the future, if something like this happens, don't just turn up volume, acknowledge there's an issue, and look into fixing it, or it will just get worse.  (Also make sure that the gain isn't loose and just turning itself down with the bumps of the car.)

Good luck,
Justin
