Car Stereos: DVD Player For my pontiac, 2005 pontiac g6, pontiac g6

Question
QUESTION: I just bought a BOSS 7 inch dvd indash player for my Pontiac G6 GT. It has the monsoon system. How do i install it into my dash correctly?

ANSWER: Hi Thomas,

To mount your DVD player into the G6, you'll need a mounting kit.  If your Boss head unit is a double-DIN design, then you'll need a Metra 95-3302 kit; if it's a single-DIN with a flip-out screen, you'll need a 99-3302 or 99-3303 kit. Note that if your factory radio includes an information center display, it will be lost unless you use the 99-3303 kit (which only works with a single-DIN head unit).

The adapter harness for your vehicle depends on the model year.  I don't think you need any particular adapter to integrate the after-market head unit with the Monsoon amplifier; from what I can tell, the Monsoon amp should be compatible with the after-market head unit's speaker outputs.  However, there won't be an accessory power wire in the stock harness, so you may need to do some extra wiring for the head unit power source, or you may need to use a special harness that works with the vehicle's data bus to generate a switched power output.

Hope this helps!

QUESTION: The model year is 2005 Pontiac G6 GT. Is there any way possible you can give me instructions how to install it. It is a double din. What is the type of harness i need? Oh and if you could on the second paragraph of your answer could you break that down for me.lol

Answer
Hi Thomas,

Here's a link to the instruction manual that comes with the 95-3302 mounting kit:

This manual includes illustrated instructions for removing the factory radio.

The proper adapter harness for your vehicle is Metra's 70-2102.  You'll also need a 40-GM10 antenna adapter.

To install your new head unit, you'll need to remove the stock radio first.  Then connect the wires in the Boss DVD player's plug to the wires in the adapter harness, using solder and tape or shrink tubing, or solderless crimp connectors.  Don't use wire nuts, and don't just twist and tape the wires together without solder.  You should make most of the connections on the work bench, not in the vehicle; don't connect the adapter harness to the factory radio plug until all the wiring connections are completed and insulated.

Most of the wires from your head unit can be connected directly to the same color wire in the adapter harness.  There are a couple exceptions, though.

The DVD player will include a "parking brake" wire.  This should be connected to the parking brake wire in the vehicle.  It can be found at the base of the parking brake; you'll probably need to take the center console apart to find it.  There's a switch built into the base of the parking brake; it will usually have a single wire coming from it.  In a GM vehicle, this wire is usually light blue.  You'll need to tap your DVD player's parking brake wire into the G6 parking brake wire, without cutting it.

Also, the red wire from your DVD player should not be connected to the red wire in the 70-2102 adapter harness.  This is the key-switched power wire, but there is no such wire in the factory radio plug.  Instead, the DVD player's red wire should be extended down to the fuse box, and tapped into a switched power source there.  One option is the windshield wiper fuse; another possibility is the open fuse position shown in this link:

Once the wiring is completed, install the Boss head unit into the mounting kit, following the instructions with the kit.  Then connect the wire plug, and the antenna (using the adapter) and mount the kit and head unit assembly into the dash.  Test the unit for proper operation before you reinstall the dash panels.

Sorry if I wasn't clearer in my original answer.  Your vehicle's Monsoon audio system includes a factory amplifier.  In many cases, when you're installing a new head unit into a vehicle with a factory amp, you need to use a special adapter interface to make the new deck work properly with the amplifier.  In your case, I don't think this adapter is necessary; the speaker outputs from the new deck should work directly with the Monsoon amp.  You'll need to make sure the Monsoon amplifier is turned on.  This is done through a wire in the factory plug.  The factory wire color is pink, and it should match up with either a blue wire, or blue/white wire, in the 70-2102 adapter harness.  You need to make sure this wire is connected to the blue/white wire in the Boss deck's harness.  (You may not have a blue/white wire; in this case, connect it to the blue wire).   This will activate the G6's antenna amplifier, and also turn on the Monsoon amplifier, when the Boss head unit is turned on.

Hope this helps!
