Car Stereos: 2001 chevy s10 radio, chevy s10, fuse panel

Question
recently replaced battery and starter. when ignition starts clock reads 1:00 and radio with not work. Every 3 or 4 seconds sounds like system is cycling but clock does not move to next digit and radio will not come on. any suggestions, fuse seems to be good.

Answer
Hi Bob,

The clock not moving forward and the radio not working suggests to me something is loose, and the power to the deck is flickering, so even if you turn the radio on, the flicker happens, and it's shut off again.  And the 'sounds like system is cycling' would be its initial power up cycle.

The first and simplest thing to check is the actual plug going into the rear of the deck.  Make sure it's in there snug, and all the wiring going into it is snug in the harness.

Second, if it's an aftermarket deck, make sure the wiring that was soldered/clipped/connected to the OEM wiring is all tight and clean.

Also, check the ground wire coming from the deck's harness.  Some cars don't use the harness for ground, and actually connect the deck to a grounding point behind it.  If that's the case, make sure there's no corrosion, and everything is tight.

Then, check the fuse panel.  Make sure the fuse is in its socket tightly.  If it's shaking around at all, you might need to go to a shop and have them move it to another fuse socket.

Make sure that all the extra wiring on the new battery was put on snugly and isn't shifting around at all.

Lastly, you just might have a dead deck.  Some wiring or a solder joint may have gone bad inside in it, and in that case, replacement is your best option.
