Auto Racing: 5.0 mustang engine, mustang engine, cam specs

Question
i am swaping a 93 5.0 HO mustang running   drivetrain into a 78 MGB.  i will use 3.27 (8.8) r/e. T5, 5sp and the 5.0 with FMS GT40 X303 alum heads, alum flywheel and perhaps an Explorer intake system.  my car will weigh approx. 2300# and handles great now. the V8 should make little or no difference due to the weight saving with much aluminum.  i need cam info.  i think a duration from 270- 280 will be ok and maybe lift around .500.   the power band i forsee is 1500 to 5500.  What are your thoughts on cam specs and am i in the neighborhood?  what about dual profile cams?  are they any better for my application?

Answer
I think you are in the right ballpark for a cam, but don't look at advertised duration, as it is pretty much meaningless. Look instead at duration at .050 cam lift. This is the industry standard. You'll be looking for something in the 220 - 230 degree range. A split pattern cam helps the engine move more air on the side with the higher number. This helps with a stock type head.
