BMW Repair: 96 328i transmission slippage, transmission slippage, auto tranny

Question
I recently bought a '96 328i w/auto tranny and 110,000+ miles on it. The transmission occassionally slips when I first start it up, especially when its cold outside. Usually the slip occurs when I come to a stop at an intersection shortly after startup. I can avoid it if I am careful to gradually give it gas and ease into 1st gear. Once the car is running for more than a few minutes I have not had a problem. I am told that this car has a sealed transmission and the fluid/filter does not need to be changed. Is this right? Does this mean the transmission is going and will need to be replaced

Answer
It is not exactly sealed, but it is supposed to be lifetime. The level can be checked from under the car via a fill plug. Have the level checked and the car scanned for any trans codes in memory.  If there are no issues then its time for the trans shop for a rebuild.
