When playing a DVD we could not get any sound.  Put in a CD and same results.  We COULD get sound when the FM button is selected.  Thinking that it was the DVD player as we had this problem with it in the past, I went out and got a new DVD player.  Set it up.  Same results.  Everything is connected where it should be.  So now I'm thinking it is the AV receiver.

Dear Jeff,

DVD players have two sets of connections, one for video and one for audio. Connecting the video, say with an S-video cable, to your TV will only supply the video. You have to connect the player's AUDIO OUT (analog, digital optical, or digital coaxial--one of the latter two only if you want surround sound) to an AUDIO IN on your receiver. Make sure when you power up the receiver that you've selected the audio channel where you connected the DVD player.

Your receiver should have at least two or three AUDIO IN ports. Try them all until you find one that works. Since you're getting FM sound, I'm thinking you missed something while connecting the player. If it was the receiver, you wouldn't get anything from any sound source.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Perhaps I was not clear.  The original set up has been working fine for the last 5 years.  Nothing had been changed, disconnected or added.  The sound just recently stopped.  I tried a new DVD player today and got the same results.  I returned the DVD player and bought a new receiver and just now completed the set up.  Same exact problem.  FM Radio still will play but no sound from CD's or DVD.

Answer
Dear Jeff,

If you changed the DVD player *and* the receiver and got the same result, then the solution has to be in how the components are connected. (The odds of getting a new receiver with the identical problem to the old receiver or getting a new DVD player with the same problem as the old DVD player are astronomical.) I suggest that you get a buddy who's familiar with this stuff to go through your system in person. That's what I would do. It's not that you've necessarily done something wrong, but I've found that when I get into positions like yours, a fresh set of eyes and hands always helps.

If you'll send me the make and model number of your components, I can try (depending if their specs are on the web) to recommend specific connections. Otherwise, there's not much more I can do.

Kindest regards,

Kevin
