Auto Electronics: Keyless entry + instrument panel replacement, gm tech 2, power doors

Question
Hello,
I recently purchased a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am. The previous owner did not have the keyless entry fobs. Can I purchase these privately and program them to work on my car? The car is equipped with power doors and windows so I believe it originally had the keyless entry.
Also, the lens for the instrument panel are cracked. I have seen panels for sale on auction sites. Can you swap one of these out with out any security issues. I know the mileage count is kept in the panel. The panels I was looking at had similar mileage as the one in the car. Thanks for your time and consideration. I do appreciate it. Kind Regards, Mike

Answer
Mike, the keyless entry fob's can be purchased and programmed to work with your vehicle. There are several places to purchase online, one being www.originalkeyless.com. However, they will need to be programmed with a GM Tech 2 scan tool. All dealerships have this tool, and perhaps some independent shops in your area. I'm afraid an instrument panel replacement would require a similar reprogramming with the GM Tech 2 scan tool. This is done to ensure the mileage is kept accurate and because different vehicle build options need to be programmed into the cluster. Check with a dealership in your area to be sure that the replacement doesn't have to be brand new. Some vehicles require only new replacement parts of this type! Good luck. Don.
