Chrysler Repair: 02 minivan diesel 2.5L: fuse 23, grand voyager, starter motor

Question
QUESTION: I have a grand voyager 2.5 cdr, before xmas the ingnition fuse blew this caused the fuel and heater plug light to become inop, I put a new fuse in and the lights came on, the vehicle started. now the fuse has blow, I have replaced it however the aformentioned lights will not come on and the vehicle will not start and the new fuse remains good, I am assuming whatever caused the fuse to blow has now blown as the fuse remains good.

ANSWER: Hi Mark,
I need more specifics: what is the model year, is this a diesel and if so was it sold in the US or exported, can you tell me the fuse # and amps which blew, and are the lights you are referring to in the instrument cluster, and the starter motor cranks but the engine will not start, or doesn't even the starter motor work?
Thanks for the information which will help me.
Roland

QUESTION: It,s a 2.5 turbo diesel grand voyager crd limited, first registered 21/11/2002, its right hand drive so I guess exported unless they make them in the uk.

The fuse is designated "Ignition Switch" and is 10amp, the 2 lights that are out are at the top of the dash, 1 is fuel and the other is for the heater plugs, all other lights come on. the car will not crank at the starter everything is dead as far as turning over goes. when this happened origionally a new fuse was put in and the car started as normal. Hope this helps.

ANSWER: Check the  + clamp on the battery to be sure it is cleanly connected and tight (remove the - post clamp first for safety purposes against a direct battery short). Check the wires that are connected to the clamp (there are three: a fat red to the starter motor, a slighly less fat to the power box, and a thin wire that should be cleanly attached to the clamp. Then make sure that you have 12v on both sides fuse 23 (the 10A one that may have blown earlier, and fuse 24 (the 20A that is directly across from 23 on the other side of the box.

QUESTION: Hi Roland, all the clamps are ok on the battery, fuse 24 has 12v on both sides fuse 23 has 12v on 1 side only as now when I put a fuse in it is blowing again, I have lifted the fuse box and disconected the electrical plug which is under the lift pump relay and nbs relay, I put the fuse back in and reconnected the battery, the fuse (23) now has power to both sides, however reconnecting the plug blows the fuse, I am assuming I may have a short at some point? I have noticed that the alarm light on the dash does not now go off, any pointers or help would be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Mark

Answer
Hi Mark,
That 23 fuse powers two sections of the ignition switch which one part draws upon it in the 'run' position and both parts in the 'start' position. Did you happen to notice if it blows just by turning it to run, or do you have to go to start before it blows? If you didn't notice, then rather than blowing another fuse just measure the resistance to ground on the cold side of the fuse socket and notice whether it is shorted to ground in the run position (i.e. less than 1 ohm) or if it only gets that low when you move to the start position.
