Chrysler Repair: engine stalled:99 Sebring, 4 digit numbers, engine controller

Question
While driving my 1999 sebring it stopped.  No lights came on it just stopped running.  the battery is good. When I turn the key it sounds like it wants to start, but nothing happens.  I have been told that it might be the ignition coil.  Before I go and make allot of repairs that didn't need to be done, can you help.

Answer
Hi Michele,
Try to use your ignition key: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch to see if some 4-digit numbers appear in the odometer window in place of the car's mileage reading. If so, write back and tell me what those numbers are. These would be fault codes that will tell us what appears to the engine controller to be the cause. If that doesn't work, then ask around to see if a friend has a 'code reader' which is a handheld device that plugs into a socket under the dash next to the steering column and which will sure tell us the numbers.
Getting the fault codes is the best way to go so you don't waste money throwing parts at the engine hoping that one will fix it.
