Answer
Hi Colin,
This behavior sounds to me like either the cam or crank sensor is getting weak and failing when it gets hot, then recovers when it cools off. You can check that out by doing a check for fault codes stored in the engine controller memory. The best thing to do is try the ignition key to see if there might be something specific stored in the engine controller memory. Turn it "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light which remains "on" to see it begin to "flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat to be sure you have an accurate set of counts. Then tell me the numbers you got in the order of appearance. The fault code numbers are actually found by grouping the counts into pairs to form two-digit numbers, in the order of appearance. The final pair of numbers is always 55 which is the code for "end of readout". The crank sensor fault code is 11, the cam sensor fault code is 54. So try this and let me know what you get.
