Chrysler Repair: A/C requires a rest from time to time, compressor clutch, engine controller

Question
'97 Voyager - A/C works beautifully for a period of 20-30 minutes and then the air isn't cool anymore. Indicator light shows system is engaged.  To fix it, I turn off the A/C for 10-15 minutes, and then turn it back on. A/C again works beautifully.. but the cycle repeats  20-30 on/10-15 off, for the rest of the trip.

Answer
Hi Carl,
This behavior is characteristic of a system which is on the margin of having sufficient refrigerant. I would suggest either adding some yourself using the kit or having it done at an AC shop.
Just in case though: You could do a fault code check of the memory of the engine controller, nonetheless, to see if there is an issue with the ac compressor clutch circuit. You might get codes using the ignition switch "on-off-on-off-on and leave" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch for either codes to replace the mileage reading of the odometer OR for the check engine light which remains "on" to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause, then repeat to assure an accurate count. Then group the counts in pairs in the order of appearance to form 2-digit fault codes. Then write back with any codes you got for a translation. Also, Autozone parts stores will do a readout for free in most cases.
