Chrysler Repair: Engine light - Chrysler Sebring 1997, digit code number, pollution control systems

Question
My engine light came on AGAIN.  I have twisted the fuel cap and checked the oil level and all is fine.  I took your advise from a 4/15 question and did the "on-off" thing.  The check engine light flashes 5 times between pauses.  Any clues as to what it is this time?  It has never failed me yet as to being something costly to fix.

Answer
Hi Mary,
By '97 the ignition key/check engine light flashing approach was out of date, I believe, for your car. So I would go to an Autozone Parts store where you may well be able to get a free readout of the memory with a reader that plugs into a socket under the dash. Find out what the 4-digit code number(s) is and then write me back with the results. Ask whoever reads the numbers for the name of the code, the meaning, what they propose be done and how much?
If you can't get a free readout then look for a shop that may do the readout for around $40 on a "special". I assume you have the 2.5L V-6 engine, but let me know if that is not the case. There are so many possible causes for the check engine light that it is pointless to conjecture about cost. But if the engine is behaving normally then I suspect it may be something related to the pollution control systems. These are not too labor intensive to repair, but parts cost can be variable to the extent that I can't give you any estimate. So let us see what fault code numbers you get.
