Classic/Antique Car Repair: 70 RR Shadow Wont engage gear, emergency brakes, th 400

Question
Hi,
My 1970 Shadow starts fine, and I then let it run for a while to warm up.
When I select gear, there is a click from behind the dashboard, as usual, and
the reversing light comes on, but the car doesn't move. if you select 'D', you
get more clicks, but no forward movement.  If you select 'N', you can't push
the car either.

I've looked underneath, and there is no ATF under the car, so I suspect it's
electrical, but I'm at a loss at where to start. Any Suggestions?

Answer
Hi Rob:
It's clear from your description that it is still in PARK. Although your gear level moves, the gear selector linkage on the TH-400 transmission has either come loose or is broken. On the transmission itself, you can see the linkage rod that actually puts the transmission in gear. Check that linkage.

Also, in very rare cases the emergency brakes will stick, but you would feel the car trying to rise up when you press the accelerator.
