Ford Repair: 1972 Mustang, holley 4160, david goldwasser

Question
I have a 72 Mustang that has sat a while.  I just rebuilt the Holley 4160 which was leaking badly.  Now with a new battery, the engine started right up.  The problem is that the battery ran down and now the engine will not start. I think the alternator is shot.  Should I also change the voltage regulator at the same time?  Also, the water pump needs replacement.  Is it a good idea to change the thermostat also?

Thanks for your time.

Answer
Mr. Goldwasser,

Yes, you should change the voltage regulator with the altenator. And yes, when you replace the water pump you should change not only the thermostat but also the radiator hoses as well as they can become dry rotted from sitting. The way to check if your altenator is bad it to take a fully charged battery (12.4 volts when off, start the vehicle and put a volt meter across the battery terminals. It should read about 14.4 volts, less than that and your altenator is probably bad. I would recommend that you first replace your battery before you replace your altenator and then perform the test for the altenator. Hope that this helps and good luck.
