Jeep Repair: 89 laredo, fuel pressure gauge, fuel rail

Question
I have an 89 laredo 4.0 the other day when I was driving it on this country road it started to cut out and evenually quit. It stared back up after awhile but it would cut out and quit the rest of the way back home. When it would quit it would have to sit about 15 minutes before it would start up again. Any suggestion as to what the problem might be? Thanks, Dustan

Hello Dustan,

My idea of what the problem may be is the fuel pump. However, it would be a good idea to check all of the fluids on the Jeep first. Next, take the key and insert it into the ignition. Turn it so that all of the gauges turn on, then turn it back to the off position. Do this 4 times. On the 3rd cycle, leave the key in the ON position. The check engine light should flash any of the codes shown in this link:  http://www.allpar.com/fix/80s-codes.html   This is a special feature from Chrysler that allows you to troubleshoot your Jeep on a very basic basis. If none of these codes show on the light, then you would most probably be looking at an overheat problem, or again the fuel pump, in which case you would need to take a fuel pressure gauge and hook it up to the fuel rail . The fuel rail is located parallel to the valve cover, and all of the fuel injectors are hooked up to it. On the fuel rail, there is a large threaded stem that would be similar to the valve stem on a tire. This is where you connect the gauge. Let me know if you need any help! Good luck with the Jeep! --Jeep4x4man
