Ron,

A short follow up, how do you go about finding a pro, many repair shops are in over their heads with the back lash issues?  Is the jeep dealer an option?
Thanks  Bill

I have a 1999 Wrangler TJ, Sahara; my rear(dana 35) end was making a grinding sound so I brought it my local mechanic, he looked at the rear differential and found; spider gears in peices as well as a chunk out of the ring gear.  All he did was diagnose, he did not want to do the repair unless he could find a used rear end to replace the entire rear.  So, I now have the vehicle home.

I am thinking as long as I have to replace the whole differential is this the time to put a limited slip in?  The vehicle is mostly a family car with rare off road use. Can a jeep dealer upgrade?  Is there a Jeep option for limited slip and is this adviseable?
OR  Can I take the repair on myself, I have been reading up on it, how long once I have the parts or is it just something an expert should do.  How to I find a good rear end mechanic if I don't want to use the Jeep dealer?

Thanks for your help.

I leave differentials to the pros, they have the equipment to do it right the first time.
I would save my money and stay with the stock set up, just replacing what is broken and leave it at that.  You don't need posi-traction type setup unless you want to do rock crawling with it.

Answer
Most areas have shops that specialize in drivelines, etc.  We have several in our area and we are out in the middle of the tundra so I would assume most areas have several as well.  Find someone that specializes in transfers cases, differentials, drivelines, etc.
Jeep dealers should have the equipment and expertise but are usually a little more pricy.
