Land Rover Repair: Surfacing Cylinder Head, discovery series ii, cylinder liners

Question
I have a set of heads off a 2001 LR Discovery Series II SD that need to be re-worked and have been told that they could only be surfaced a max of .002". Is this true or might I be able to get away with cutting a few more thousands until the surface cleans up. Thanks.

Answer
You can probably go up to 30/1000ths of an inch.  A good machine shop will be able to measure them and tell you how much it is good to take off.  If your heads are warped badly, I would inspect the cylinder liners carefully for movement and porosity as any overheating failure severe enough to warp the cylinders is very likely to damage on or more liners in this year of the Discovery II.
