Land Rover Repair: are transmissions interchangable?, range rover forum, discoweb org

Question
Is there a manual transmission available that will fit into a 1998 range rover 4.0/4.6 without the original RR engine?
I would rather replace a clutch over a whole auto-trans.
thanks
Eric

Answer
Hi Eric,

I took a look for a manual transmission for your 98 Rangie and could not find a salvage yard that had one.  I searched for manual transmissions for LR Discovery 4.0 engines and found only a few and they were for 96 and 97 model years.  The rest are for older Discovery's 3.9 engines.

Here in N.America, there is not many Rangie owners who want manual transmissions.

I used the following website to search salvage yards:

www.car-part.com

I would think that you would be fitting an older 4.0 manual transmission to your '98 4.0 engine.

If you want to ask a fellow Range Rover owner about this, I suggest you take a look at www.discoweb.org and the technicai bulletin board.  There is a Range Rover forum that may be able to help you with this.

There is also www.rangerovers.net as another resource.

Best of luck,
