Land Rover Repair: 1998 Land Rover Discovery 4.0 - 155K miles, land rover service, land rover discovery

Question
I am experiencing a "swish-swish" sound between speeds of 30 - 50 mph., the sound seems to come from my right rear axle. When I release off the accelerator the sound goes away. I recently had a new differential (rear) installed at a LR Dealer (ouch).  I took it back because of the recent sound and was told I "may" need a new gear box ($4,400).  Yes, I have the normal leak and clunk sound when placed in gear as do everyone else. I make several 500 mile trips in this vehicle each year, suggestions. I went to a certified dealer (recommended by atlantic british) and was told it was my brake pads, stated replace them when they are completely worn out.  I am confused why the sound is not consist, but only at 30 - 50 mph.  I was told I should not be overly concerned.

Answer
It sounds like the service facility told you not to worry and you're not comfortable with that.  I suggest you find another Land Rover service facility and ask for a second opinion.  There is no way I can advise you on a noise - someone has to listen to it.

Try looking in the shop index on www.rangerovers.net.

Good luck,
