Land Rover Repair: ABS/Traction Control Sensor Problem, land rover discovery, shuttle valve

I have a 2000 Land Rover Discovery, SD Model, with 121,000 km on it (about 75,000 miles).  I recently went over a speed bump and the Traction Control, ABS and Steep Descent lights came on (amber).  They went off after a couple of starts and I didn't worry about it.

However, recently it happened again.  Went over a speed bump and the bells rang and the lights have come on and now they won't go off.  I took it to my mechanic, who said that their diagnostic computer did not have the info. from Land Rover to figure out where the problem was - which sensor was causing the grief.  Apparently they need some sort of code that has not been provided. I am trying to avoid taking it to the dealership.  Is this a common problem?  Do you have any ideas/suggestions for me/my mechanic? Any info. on the codes?  Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Cheryl,

I sorry I don't have much on fault codes for the ABS, HDC or ETC system.  That is kept with LandRover and revealed using their 'testbook' diagnostic device.

It may not be as serious as you think.  A LR service technician should be able to diagnose this problem quickly and give you an idea as to the cause. From that point you can elect to have them do the work or have your mechanic perform the service.

Its times like this that finding a good dealer service department is really important.  I understand your reluctance to rush to the dealer...but it would probably save you more money by at least having them perform the diagnostics.  I just hope the dealership is forthcoming about what is wrong.

Usually, its either a wheel sensor, shuttle valve (or switch) or (worst case) the modulator itself.

Best of luck,

Thanks so much. I'll go to the dealer and have them do the diagnostic.

Answer
Hi Cheryl,

one owner reported to me that his 2002 Disco had a small problem with a pump and the dealer was able to fix it that very same day.  Not sure how much it cost but at least he was back out on the road.

The dealer diagnostics should reveal the problem component.
