Land Rover Repair: Freelander High Idling, throttle position sensor, high idling

Question
Hi

I have a 1998 Freelander 3dr Tdi (L-series Diesel)
It just started to idle high (just above 1000rpm) and sometimes it would shoot up to between 3000-4000 rpm when ingaging the clutch (when coming to a stop). I have also found that sometimes when idling high if I pump the brake pedal the revs would come down.....any ideas would help

Answer
Hi Benji,

I've seen this in my 5 speed manual Disco.  The high rev's and random fluctuating idle could be a problem with either the TPS (throttle position sensor), a vacuum leak or switch fault, fouled injectors or faulty idle control switch.

You say during high rev's that touching the brakes causes the rev's to reduce...the only link I know of is vacuum related.  Something to consider.

Let me ask around for some other opinions on this.  I'll get back to you hopefully with more detail.
