Land Rover Repair: 1995 Discovery, diagnostic steps, compression engine

Question
I have a few questions that I'd like to ask if you don't mind.
1) The 2 rear windows of my Disco are not working. I have
checked all the fuses and they're all good and I've made sure
that they're connected properly, but I can't seem to locate the
problem.
2) My Disco has died twice in the past week when I've been
driving it. First, the speedometer stops working (the tachometer
hasn't worked since I've bought it) then when I do anything that
takes power from the engine it dies a little more. Eventually the
Disco won't let accelerate any more and I have to get it towed
home to charge it. There is a brand new battery and rebuilt
alternator in the Disco.
I would greatly appreciate some advice from you. Thank you,
James R Wetherbee Jr

Answer
Hi James,

I will get back to you about Q#1 with some diagnostic steps or a website with pictures to help you out.

Regarding Q#2: its your alt.  I've replaced 3 alts in my '95 (not counting the original) and only 2 months ago, I got fed up and decided to rebuild the alt myself (well actually I had some help from some friends).

Those LR alts require a fully charged battery with no plate faults.  The moment the battery starts to loose its deep cycled charge (for whatever reason), the alt has to work even harder and eventually it takes "the big sleep" and dies.  It could be the heat from the high compression engine coupled with the overworking alt.  Not sure.

The moment I don't see my Tach working I know the alt has gone "south".  There is a 2-wire connector that is attached to the alt with feeds the a tach.  You say your tach never worked...hopefully its because it was not plugged.  I can't imagine someone cutting this off.

Replace your alt with one from a reputable wrecker ($45US) and buy a NEW fully charged (deep charged) high quality battery.  I like InterState but Delco is good too.

I'll get back to you with info on your window problem.  Its common to most Disco series I owners.
