Land Rover Repair: Range Rover shaking, wheel alignment, steering damper

Question
I have a '96 RR and when it reaches around 70 MPH the front begins to shake/wobble, I also see the stering wheel shaking.

Answer
Hello J.Moreno,

this sounds like your steering damper.  Its a common problem with Land Rovers and its easy to replace.  Our LR's are very heavy and I suspect that the steering damper is just not stong enough to last more than 4 or 5 years, depending on where and how you drive.  I live in the Laurentian moutains of Quebec Canada and in the spring our roads become 'washboards' and a test to my off-road driving ability.  I've replaced two dampers so far on my '95 Disco.

It is possible that you may have a balljoint or even track rod problem as well.  Take your Rangie to a suspension specialist as have them inspect these areas.  Another suggestion is to have a 4x4 wheel alignment performed.  If there are any problems, the shop will tell you that the alignment cannot be performed until the suspension problems are addressed.  A wheel alignment should be done every two or three years.

Cost of the work depends on where you go.  The dealers know and service the vehicle quickly but more expensively.  Third party specialists could do the work, but ask first to make sure they are familiar with Land Rover and can get the parts.  Often times, suspension shops can do the work and save you up to 50%.  The other option is that you do the work.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
