MG Car Repair: Hylomar HPF Gasket sealer, rubber gasket, moss motors

Question
Howard,

I am replacing the fuel tank and sending unit on my 72 MG Midget.  Moss recommends using the referenced sealer on the rubber ring between the sending unit and fuel tank.  Are there any other equivalent products and should it be used on both sides of the rubber ring?  Also, does the installation  begin with the rubber ring first then the sending unit on top of the rubber ring and then the locking ring?

Answer
Hi Gus,
At the dealership when we changed out a sending unit or removed one for diagnosis, we did not use any sealer at all and the rubber gasket went in first and the sending unit on the seal and last the lock ring.

However we always had new or relatively new tank, sending units etc to work with and I never had any leaks. But now that the cars are quite old (in car years) a sealer of some kind may be safer to use.

I have friends who restore MGs and Triumphs and they use Hylomar sealer a lot and say it is a good sealer. Plus the fact that Moss Motors is an expert in the business and you can usually count on what they say.
