Mitsubishi Repair: Gen1 Pajero, coolant temperature sensor, automatic tranny

Question
QUESTION: What is the "water temperature sensor" and "temperature switch" for?

ANSWER: JJ: The coolant temperature sensor is just below the thermostat in your car's engine. It sends the computer what it needs to get the engine to run, with the idea of what the temps are with the water that runs through your car's engine to keep it cool or if it is getting to hot. As for the temperature switch I don't know what you are talking about there. But without knowing where or how that temperature switch goes in the engine or what is does. I can not answer the question. Also it would help to know the make, model of the car and the miles. Hope this helps and God bless: Linda

QUESTION: My 1989 Montero has a 2.6L 4G54 aka Astron engine. I looked at the service manual and saw the following:

1) Thermo Switch (for engines with Automatic Tranny)
2) Water Temperature Switch (for vehicles with aircon)
3) Water Temperature Sensor
3) Water Temperature Gauge Unit

Unfortunately, I cant see what these are for. I assumed the Temperature switch is for the auxiliary fan and the gauge unit is for the meter. I have no idea what the water temperature sensor is for. Are old models such as my rig equipped with a computer?

Answer
JJ: Have you had your car coded to know that these sensors your wrote about are the ones causing your problems? Coding the car is when you hook your car's computer up to another computer; then there is a read out as to your car's system and what is going on. At that time if there is any sensors bad, it would show up on the print out. Yes, your car is control by a computer, if you want a car with no computer you would have to go back into the 60's or early 70's. Unless your car is bothering with something or you have the car coded to see if there is a problem in the system. I would not worry about these sensors at this time.
