Mitsubishi Repair: Engine and/or electrical question, negative battery cable, radiator fluid

Question
Hi,
I have a 94 Mitsubishi Eclipse with a 2.0 non turbo motor.  The radiator light is coming on (the orange light beside the check engine light) and the engine isn't running hot or leaking in radiator fluid. The check engine light is coming on also for an EGR alert.  All vaccuum tests show EGR works.  However, this EGR has no pressure sensor.  The DIY book doesnt show a sensor but I know it came with one from the factory.  Would this cause those lights to come on.  Additional info:  I have a new water pump, and these lights came on after I did an ignition timing adjustment.  Thank You,
John

Answer
John,
The radiator light usually indicates that the amount of fluid in your coolant overflow bottle is low.  The sensor is at the bottom of the bottle.  Check to make sure you have enough fluid and that the sensor is connected properly.  It's possible that sensor is either bad or has excessive dirt on it; giving a false reading.

Your check engine light (CEL) dealing with your EGR problem is most likely not related.  Usually a computer will not throw that code unless the car was sold in California.  Your car still does have an EGR valve (unless purchased in Japan) located below your throttle body.  You may want to remove and clean out your EGR valve.  That may help.  To reset your CEL, just disconnect your negative battery cable for about 30 seconds then re-attach it.

If all else fails, check your car's computer.  Read this article for further information:

If your ECU appears damaged, that is probably what's cauing some of your problems.  You would need to have the computer replaced if the damage is severe enough.
Good luck!
