Motorcycle Repair: Loose throttle grip on 2003 yamaha R6, throttle grip, yamaha r6

Question
I have a 03 yamaha r6 and the throttle grip is loose. How do I tighten it? Would appreciate any help or advise you can give.

Thanks
Mark

Answer
By "loose" do you mean there is a lot of slack in the cables or do you mean that the grip is almost falling off the handlebar?

If it is cable slack, follow the throttle cable from the handlebar towards the carbs. Somewhere along the way, usually underneath a rubber sleeve, there will be an adjuster. Loosen the locknut and wind out the adjuster until there's only a slight amount of slack at the throttle grip, then tighten the locknut in place (usually two 10mm wrenches are needed). If you take out too much slack, the cable will actually pull on the carb mechanisms and increase the idle speed even if you're not touching the grip, so be careful with this adjustment.

If the grip is almost falling off the handlebar, you will need to buy a new throttle grip and barrel assembly.
