Motorcycle Repair: Sportster will not start, sportster 1200 custom, cold cranking amps

Question
QUESTION: I own a 1998 Sportster 1200 custom. I have not been able to get it to run for the past week. When I try to start the bike the headlight dims and all I get is a clicking noise. I am hopeing you can give me some answers. I checked the battery connections and also used a multimeter to see if the battery is good. I dont know how to check the starter to see if i need to replace it.

ANSWER: How old is your battery. It might not have enough cold cranking amps left in it to start your bike. Might just need to replace your battery. If your sure the battery is good I'd look at the starter relay next.

QUESTION: how do i check the relay. and where on the bike is it located.

Answer
Its located behind the left side cover. Its a small black square device that has 4 wires plugged in to it. You can check the operation of the starter relay with the use of a ohmmeter, jumper wires and a battery that is fully charged. You'll need to disconnect the wire plug from the starter relay and remove the relay from the bike. Your going to be checking for continuity. The relay terminals are printed on the bottom of the relay casing. Next connect an ohmmeter and a 12 volt battery to relays terminals. Either lead of your ohmmeter to leads 87 and 30 this will have both of the ohmmeter leads connected. Then connect the positive lead of the battery to terminal 86 and the negative lead to terminal 85. This setup will energize the relay for testing. Your ohmmeter should read 0 ohms [continuity]. If there is no continuity then replace the relay with a new one. If there is continuity then put the relay back on the bike and take a look at the bank angle sensor.
