Motorcycle Repair: hd cv jetting, air fuel mixture, rubber side down

Question
QUESTION: hello, i am and avid do it yourselfer and i am having problems getting my jetting correct. I have a 2000 electra glide classic. my bike starts fine and runs good at mid throttle except when i hammer on it then try to get back in it, it hesitates. i put a needle in it with the clip in the second notch. and changed the main jet not sure what # and did not change the slow jet I just got bits and pieces from my buddies leftover kits and also drilled out the plug and set it 2 and half out. I made my own pipe by cutting off the rear y and welding a cap over it and gutting a stock can, it sounds really good and have a stock air cleaner with the backing plate cut off. Thanks for the help my road king got stolen on my wedding night(it was running great)and my parents gave us this one with 45000 miles on just trying to make it run better. thanks and keep rubber side down

QUESTION: Mike the plugs are not new but they are black with just a little carbon no build up. thanks jason

Answer
Blach plugs are a sign of running rich. First, start the bike and let it warm up. Adjust the air/fuel mixture screw by slowly turning it inward, just until the bike starts to stumble and then outward 1/4 of a turn. Now you need to set the intermediate jet. I would start by going one jet smaller. Once you have it replaced go for a ride with new plugs. Ride for around 10 miles, never going over 2500 RPM. When you get back check the plugs. they should be a tan color. Black and to rich, white and to lean. Keep changing jets until you get the intermediate jet set. Now set the main. Move the clip on the needle up one and go for a ride. this time go over 3000 so the bike is running on the main jet. Same thing, black, to rich, white to lean.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
