Motorcycle Repair: Carb adjustment, air fuel mixture, intermediate jet

Question
Hi Mike,
I have a 1987 FLT with stock 1340 motor,  but I just put on a S&S Super E carb.  It was running too rich so I turned down the accelerator pump and Idle fuel mixture.  It might be running a little lean now by the looks of the spark plugs. Insulator is white with a little black. Could you help me in fine tuning this carb.
Thanks,
Chris

Answer
Your air fuel mixture screw only affects the bike when it ideling. When the bike is running between 1200-3000RPM aprox, you are running on the intermediate jet. Above 3000RPM you are on the main.
Start the bike and let it warm up. Now slowly turn the air fuel mixture screw inward just until the bike starts to stumble. Now go back about 1/4 turn. Now its set.
Turnt he accelerator pump screw inward until it seats. What you want is the pump turned off.
Now go for a ride, staying under 3000RPM. If the bike doesnt take gas you are to rich. Ride for about 5-10 miles and pull the plugs. Check the color. Black, to rich, real white, to lean. Change the intermediate jet to either richen or make it leaner. Anytime you change jets readjust the air fuel mixture.
Once you hve it set now do the main jet. Ride over 3000RPM and look for the dame thing.
Once you have both set now open the accelerator pump about 1.5 turns and go for a ride. Crank the throttle on. If the bike stumbles open it a little farther until you get it set
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
