Motorcycle Repair: 1979 TWINSTAR 185CC, regulator rectifier, volt battery

Question
THE CYCLE WAS IN FOR SERVICE 2 YEARS AGO. IT NEEDED A BATTERY AND WHAT THEY CALLED " A FUSIBLE LINK "
I CHARGE THE 6 VOLT BATTERY OVERNIGHT AND HAVE NO LIGHTS OR START THE NEXT DAY. WHERE CAN I FIND THIS LINK AND CAN I INSTALL A CIRCUIT BREAKER IN IT'S PLACE? I REALLY WANT TO GET THIS BIKE RUNNING!
THANKS, GEORGE

Answer
I checked the online microfiche for this model and there are no fusible links listed or illustrated, just a fuse back at the battery area.

If you left the battery sitting for 2 years, it probably needs to be replaced by now.

If the bike has been running and just developed this problem, then you will need to check the battery to see that it is capable of holding a charge, then the charging system and electrics need review.

On some of the smaller bikes the headlight only comes on when the engine is running. If you have NO lights at all, when the switch is ON, then either the switch is not functioning, the fuse is blown, the battery is dead or there is a short in the wiring system. If the regulator rectifier dies, then it can discharge the battery overnight.

www.electrexusa.com is a good source for charging system info.  Get a shop manual with wiring diagram so you aren't wasting a lot of troubleshooting time.
