Motorcycle Repair: Maxim Wont Start; Flooding, gas stabilizer, richmond vt

Question
Hi,

I am having trouble getting my 83' 750 Yamaha Maxim started after pulling it out of winter storage.

I stored it as I have for many winters: filled gas tank and treated with gas stabilizer. I did other winter prep, including pulling the battery and covering the air intake and exhaust to prevent moisture from getting in.

After pulling it out I was able to start it and run it long enough to get it from an outside shed and into my garage. It was running very rough and the exhaust was black.

In many subsequent attempts, I have been unsuccessful in getting more than a few brief momements of horribly rough running.

When starting now, it turns, but won't fire. I occassionally get backfires.

When I pull the plugs, they are wet with gas. I have tested for spark and have spark at all 4 cylinders.

I'm pretty sure my problem is too much gas. (Perhaps a stuck float). If it's a stuck float, how can I unstick it? I don't feel qualified to dismantle my carbs, but would like to get it started so that I don't have to pay for an expensive tow.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Bob,

I suspect either too much stabilizer was added with the gasoline or gas in carbs varnished. Either can cause symptoms as described. Both require cleaning carburetors. At least try fresh gas throughout.

If a float is sticking, the carbs must be removed and cleaned. Needle valves and seats may have a spec of rust or other object between them.
