Motorcycle Repair: frame modification, frame jig, frame specs

Question
Hi Mike

Well from the looks of things you are deeply appreciated around here!

My question is, I have a XL1200C that I plan to chop. I am planned some extended trips across the US so I don't want a rigid. I just scored a 6" over springer on Ebay and I want to modify the existing frame to fit it. If i strip the bike down to the frame and take it to a shop to weld in some stretch and rake how much should I expect to pay? What questions should I ask to determine if the welder is qualified to perform the job? And just curious, do you have any idea what the proper amount of stretch would be to have it come out at 38 degrees rake?

Answer
The cost is going to depend on what part of the country you live so it is hard for me to say. I know where I live it costs around $200.00 for this kind of work.
The biggest thing you need to find out is do they have a frame jig. Just cutting and welding a frame can throw the frame specs off. If you get the front to rear off a little bit then the bike will not run straight down the road.
Your frame person should be able to tell you about the rake. It is all going to depend on how much stretch you plan on doing.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
