Motorcycle Repair: 2000 Kawasaki ZX6, kawasaki zx6, clutch lever

Question
Hi. Here is the situation I have.  With my bike started and in neutral, when I go to put it in first gear, the bike will shut off.  It doesn't happen everytime.  But, if it does go into first and stay running, as soon as I let the clutch out, it will die.  I've also noticed that with my bike started and in neutral, if I pull the clutch lever in and try to put it in second gear, it will not kick off, but it will "bog" down the rpm's and act like it's going to die.

At first I thought it was the clutch cable.  I replaced the cable and the problem still exists.  I'm thinking it is either the clutch hub or it could be the shift shaft area.  I was wondering, how do I know what is going on with this thing?  Do you happen to know what the problem might be?  I really appreciate any and all the help you can give me.  This is driving me crazy.  You can even call me to get any information you might need in answering this problem.  I live in Georgia.  My home number is (229) 883-0614.  Thank you for your time and assistance.

Answer
Hi Mick,

I suspect the side stand switch or clutch switch are causing the problem. The service manual describes how to check these parts and gives specific info.

Check both switches with multimeter set to 1k ohms. Zero the meter before performing any measurements. Disconnect the switch from the wiring harness and measure resistance (continuity) thru switch while pressing the switch button. Basically, you should have meter sweep with the button depressed and no meter sweep the opposite.

Try this and advise. We'll go from there. For speedy service use my email: mshively1@woh.rr.com
