Nissan Repair: 98 NISSAN FRONTIER O.D. inop, nissan frontier, nissan dealer

Question
QUESTION: I recently had my instrument cluster fail, after I installed another I lost my OD  In park I can get the OD off by pressing the selector, any other position other than park nothing happens.

ANSWER: Dave,

I would check the instrument cluster to make sure it is the same.  It sounds like you have a cluster from a manual vehicle.  You might swap some of the parts out of the old cluster to get things back in order.  I am thinking there is a shift board in the cluster you removed that might just fit the new cluster.

QUESTION: I have the same instriment cluster as my original.  Since February Nissan has had the "SPEEDO UNIT" on back order.  I contacted repair centers to have my original cluster repaired but I have not recieved any reponse.  My Nissan dealer here lost O.D. in their Frontier parts truck, short  of replacing the transmission they sold the truck off.  I retried my original cluster but o.d. wont work with it now either.

Answer
Dave,

The cluster should not cause the OD not working and I would get someone with a Consult II to diagnose the transmission while is is being driven.  They will know if the overdrive sensor is not working or if the computer is defective.  If you have the proper cluster it should be the transmission or the transmission computer.
