Nissan Repair: replacing nissan ignition lock cylinder, nissan truck, self tappers

Question
Hello,
I need to replace the ignition lock cylinder for my 1997 nissan truck. How do you suggest removing the bolts holding it to the steering column? They are round on top with nothing to grip on to.

thanks,
john

Answer
John,

They are not bolts.  They are rivits that have to be removed.  Then, you can thread the holes and install bolts.  I have had luck with a chisle and a hammer working them up enough to get vice grips on them.  Then take the collar off and thread the one side and use a bolt of the same threads and you are there.  Or, you can get some self tappers.  Some mechanics I have seen have ground the heads off and removed them that way and then used a punch to get the rest of the rivit out of the holes.
