Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Timing belt or chain?, oldsmobile cutlass supreme, throttle position sensor

Question
Hi how are u doing? I have a question about my 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SL 6 cylinders 191 M 3.1L SFI 166,235 miles. I wanted to know if there is a timing belt or timing chain that the engine runs on. Also I wanted to know where the timing cover is located. The reason why is because I getting no power from the engine and I wanted to know if this could be the cause and how could I check it out. Thanx !

Answer
Hi Marcus,
My manual only goes to 1996, but all the engines through 96, including the 3.1, have a timing chain, not a belt.

A worn out timing chain and gears could cause low power, but would also cause hard starting, and probable eratic idle, among other things.

For just low power, I would check the fuel filter, then the fuel pressure.
A dirty mass airflow sensor, bad throttle position sensor, bad oxygen sensor, or just need of a good tuneup could also cause it.

The timing cover is on the front of the block, behind the belt pulleys and water pump.
