Pontiac Repair: 1990 pontiac transport, pontiac transport, distributor cap

Question
I have a 1990 pontiac transport and have issues with it dying while I am driving.  Once I have stopped and sat for awhile it would start back up.  It also would back fire and shutter when id accelerate quickly.  However the last time it stopped rnning it wouldn't start back up.  I have changed the plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, the control module that sits under the rotor(can't remember the exact name) and I still don't have any spark!!!  Any suggestions?

Thanks

Josh

Answer
Hey Josh your close to the problem. More then likley it needs a pick up coil in the distributor. when it heats up the resiatnce increases or the coil it's self shorts out. Pretty common failure of that vinatge. You have to pull the distributor out to replace the coil. when you have the cap off take a look at the main shaft (where the rotor goes) if you look down on it there is a wheel with 6 pints on it and there is a brown magnet between the shaft and the pointed gear so to speak if the magnet looks bloated and or distorted or cracked the main shaft will need to be replaced also. If that is the case and you need both pieces get a whole reman distributor. When you take it out Not the position of the rotor and which way it turns as you pull it up and out of the engine so you can put the thing back in close to where you took it out so it will run and then you can set the timing. That timing on that van requires a special procedure look at the white under hood emission tag it will tell you want to do and it should ahve the timing spec on it as well.  Good luck :)
