Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): garden tractor, blown head gasket, crankcase breather

Question
I bought a sears garden tractor in 2003 25 hp kohler model #cv730    type number 0017. It has been trouble since, needed new head gasket 2007, piston ring broke in 2010 ,replaced engine in 2010 . now it is burning oil at an alarming rate . what can I do if anything.

Answer
Engine service manual link:

Engine Uses Excessive Amount of Oil
● Loose or improperly torqued fasteners.
● Blown head gasket/overheated.
● Breather reed broken.
● Clogged, broken, or inoperative crankcase breather.
● Crankcase overfi lled.
● Incorrect oil viscosity/type.
● Worn cylinder bore.
● Worn or broken piston rings.
● Worn valve stems/valve guides.

I would start by making sure the oil weight is correct.  Next, remove, clean, and check the breather as described in the manual.  Check the dipstick o-ring and any other gaskets and o-rings for leaking.  Often times dirt and oil will collect near a leaking gasket or o-ring.  A leak can cause a loss of crankcase vacuum.

If you have access to a leakdown tester I would test the engine to see how the internal components are sealing.
