My B&S 18.5 hp (Model 31P777, Type 0438-E1) engine needs a complete rebuild.  The piston connecting rod broke and cracked the cylinder assembly (block).  The price for full engine replacement is $1,000 so I'm considering doing a rebuild at home.  I have some experience with engines and lots of tools.  Should I try to do a rebuild at home, leave that for the expert, or just buy a replacement engine?  Thanks.

Where is the block cracked?  If you have to have machine work done to repair the block then I would recommend a complete new engine.  You will get a new carb, starter, and charging system with a new engine.

If you old carb, starter, and charging system are in good shape you should be able to use a shortblock which should be cheaper than a complete engine.  You will need a torque wrench to install the heads and flywheel on a shortblock.
