Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Engine Briggs & Stratton -- Model number 95902-3117-01, briggs stratton, throttle lever

Question
RE: Engine Briggs & Stratton -- Model number 95902-3117-01
Mower starts and then immediately cuts off.  (It has been starting  and running fine all season)  Engine starts and cuts off instantly. Have cleaned and re-oiled Air Cleaner.
It seems fuel is not getting through from carburetor. I've noticed the spring does not change the position on control lever of carburetor and the link, that looks lile a tiny paperclip, is ineffective and does not push the idle control back.  Could this be the problem? How does one make sure fuel lines are clear? What should be done? Your insight or suggestions will be appreciated. Best,  Anne

Answer
Hi Anne,
To make sure that the fuel line is clear, you should be able to blow through it, but the only reason it shouldn't be clear is if you haven't used the engine in a few years and it has gummed-up fuel in it. For the governor, make sure the throttle isn't stuck. Also, there should be a metal arm coming out of the crankcase of the engine. The end of this arm should assist in the governing of the throttle. If this isn't connected to the throttle lever, then the engine will run unpredictably. If this isn't moving the throttle lever, and it is very obvious that it isn't, then the problem is mechanical. Inside the cranckcase, there is a governor clutch. It is a gear that runs off of the camshaft. If you have to make sure that this is working, then you have to remove the crankcase cover. If it appears to be seized or broken, it needs to be replaced. If you do not feel comfortable doing this yourself, then take it to a shop. Hope I helped!
