Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): performance, comet clutches, hp briggs

Question
I'm currently rebuilding a 5hp B&S horiz. engine.purpose for a gokart.I have built some in the past, but know I'm looking into doing perfomance rebuilds.I want to start with minimum cost until I get more familiar with upgarades' comp.cams etc... what can I do to with what I have now? any tricks or things I can do add a little pep to this motor.
 Thank's Gabriel

Answer
I get lots of questions on how to build a go-kart engine out of a 5 hp Briggs. With a Briggs egine you either have to go all the way or not at all.

This engine won't spin any faster or make any more power without major revisions.  You can speed the engine up with the governor but it won't have any power after about 2800 rpms.

If you want to go all out you will need a titanium rod, comp cam, bigger valve springs,  fuel pump carb, and lots of engines to experiment on.

If you want to build a faster cart the easiest things are bigger tires and a quality torque converter system.  Go to Comet clutches and do a little clutch research.  That's the cheapest and best way to pep up your go-kart.

Go to this site and read up. It will help a lot.
