Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere 116 Lawn Tractor, john deere 116 lawn tractor, electric fuel pump

Question
John,
I figured out the difference. According to my local dealer's service manager, JD retrofitted a higher amp stator because the original just didn't have the amps to accomplish its job. This model tractor has an electric PTO switch that pulls about 10 amps. Thus, the need for a bigger stator. I obtained and installed the larger stator and everything seems to be good so far.
Thanks for all your help.
Tim

Question -
John,
I obtained a new stator from my local JD dealer.  However, it only has one wire on it where the old one has two.  Is there something I am missing here?
Thanks,
Tim

Question -
John,
The only numbers I have been able to locate without removing the flywheel are 42-2 stamped on each of the cylinder heads and A2A stamped on the engine block. I can tell you that the engine is a two cylinder horizontally opposed engine. Beyond that, I'm still looking for answers.
Thanks,
Tim

Question -
John,
Below is the exchange I have had with Eric up to this point. When I attempted to follow up I was informed that he was "maxed out" and could accept no more questions. Thank you in advance for any information and assistance you may provide.
Tim

Eric,
Thank you for your prompt response. Yes, the battery is still connected when I remove the jumper cables, but I just had it checked at AutoZone and learned that it is too dead to hold a charge. I purchased a new battery but have not yet tried it. I'm not sure about the electric fuel pump. If there is some way I could send them, I have some digital pictures of the engine and carb that might help. Also, I can't find any kind of identification tag on the engine itself. The tractor has a Product Identification number of MOO116D338995; 116 LAWN TRACTOR/117OH.
Thanks again,
Tim

Question -
I am attempting to resurrect a JD 116 lawn tractor with a B & S two cylinder engine. I starts and runs with jumper cables in place, but dies when jumper cables are removed. Any information would be appreciated. I grew up driving JDs ranging from the 430 "popper" to the 4630 with "sound guard body." This is my first attempt at working on a lawn size tractor.
Thanks

Answer -
Is the mower battery still connected when it stalls.

I can't think of any Briggs engine that has an automotive style coil.  My point is that the engine should run with or without a battery.

Do you have the engine model, type and code number?
I don't believe the 116 has an electric fuel pump but you may want to check for one; look in the tank and follow the fuel line from the tank to the carb.

Let me know.
Eric

 Hello Tim:

No Worries. We are All Here to Help. You did right by Suppling me we All the Conversations. The Numbers you sent were for the Mower.  Look for the Engine Numbers on the Blower Housing(metal engine cover), Above the Spark Plug. They are Stamped Into the Housing Itself. This Location Depends on How New the Engine is. I have worked on a Few of the Briggs Engines that were Special Orders and had the External Coil. Also the Stator Isnt Working. Thats why the Engine Quits when you Disconnect the Jumper Cables. If the Stator were Working the Current from the Stator will Supply the Current for the Coil. The Engine Numbers will be a Great Help. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Hello Tim:

No Worries. I found what I needed. Go to this Addy http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H and Enter Model Number 116. This is a Complete Breakdown of the Mower and the Engine. Then Select the Sectional View. Then Select the Ignition Systen, Flywheel and Blower Housing. The Trigger Coil, Item Number 24, Requires A Good Battery or Good Stator in Order to Operate. Also, the Stator is Item Number 1. This will Allow the Engine to Run with a Bad Battery or on its Own Current. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Hello Tim:

Are you Sure this is the Engine that Came on this Mower? The Stator on the Engine is a Heaver AMP(16amp) Stator. The Stator that this Engine Shows is the 9AMP Stator. You can Use the Single Lead Stator. One Lead (red usually) is for the Charging of the Battery and the Other is for the Headlights on the Dual Lead Stator. The Single Lead Stator is for the Battery Charging Only. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please. I enjoy knowing the Outcome. Thanks.
