Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S Charging system wiring, briggs and stratton, trickle charger

Question
Hi Mr. Bridges,
I have a question about the charging system on a Briggs and Stratton 12.5 horse Motor.
Model # 286707 Type # 4526-A1 Code # 96919ZB
I picked up a Craftsman 42" riding mower (5 years old) that had no motor and needed some cosmetic work. I bought a used 12.5 and installed it everything works great and it is a joy to ride instead of push a mower but I have no charging system. The motor (#'s above) has three wires coming out of the cover, one red one black that have been capped off with crimp type connectors and the ground for the coil that I am using. The wiring for the mower is questionable, I had to make a few repairs and hook up a couple of switches that were bypassed, seat switch, clutch switch etc. But I can't figure out the charging system. Can you tell me how to wire it so I have a charging system. I don't want to use the original wiring for obvious reasons but I would like to hook up the amp meter(there are no wires to it right now) and have it charge instead of having to hook up my trickle charger to it once a week.
Just so you know I have been an auto mechanic for 30 years and, as I am sure you are well aware, that gives me no license to say I can repair small engines.
Thanks for any help you can give me on this.
Tom

Answer
 Hello Tom:

As you might have Guessed the Red wire is the Generator Hot wire and the Black wire is the Generator Ground. The Ground as you know can be Attached to the Frame (not the Engine). The Red goes to the Soleniod where the Battery Cable from the Battery is Attached. By the way; theres Not that much Difference between Automitive and Small Engines. Hope this Helps.

  Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
