Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): homelite engine ignition, engine ignition, voltmeter

Question
my homelite powered (water)liquid pump won't start because of a VERY small but sharp spark at plug.it also seems to be intermittent. my question is how do you check the coil to see if it is up to snuff?i have a voltmeter etc.but don't know what to look for on the coil leads.any assistance would be greatly appreaciated!

Answer
If the ignition system is up to par, it should be able to jump a 1/8" gap.  Otherwise, you need to troubleshoot the ignition.  I don't know if this has a points ignition or electronic.  If it's points and condensor, I recommend replacing them and having the coil checked by a shop.  If it's electronic, all you can do is make sure the shut-off lead(s) and switch aren't grounded out and the armature to flywheel gap is correct (0.010").  If these are OK and still no spark, replace the ignition module.  Hope this helps.
