Steering Column Repair: 94 Chevy Steering column, tilt steering, chevy steering column

Question
QUESTION: I started my truck once today & the switch stuck a little. Tried to re-start & the switch didn't turn enough to start. The rod that runs along the left side of the column doesn't move when I try to turn the key. Is it supposed to? Or is the switch just messed up? I can move the rod to hear the swith down on the column click. What do I need to do?

Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Andy:
I need to know what model vehicle you are working on and specifically if it has a tilt or non-tilt steering column.
Once I have that information, I can certainly help you

Thanks

QUESTION: Sorry, it is a 1994 Chevy C2500 w/tilt, standard trans. I have the steering wheel off & the switch that is located on the lower left side of the column, when I try to turn the ignition switch, the rod going to the lower switch does not move at all! I tried depressing the switch by hand & still nothing.
Thanks

Answer
GM Rack gear
GM Rack gear
Thanks Andy:

It sounds like the rack gear is broken. This is a fairly common problem in GM tilt columns.  I am enclosing a picture of the part so you can see what you are after. Most of the time, the semicircle part breaks disconnecting the lock cylinder which still rotates and the actuator rod leading tho the ignition switch mounted on the tube.

We have recently uploaded some videos on our website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the parts you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the video is for a Chevrolet truck with an automatic trans, the column is almost identical to yours.
