Steering Column Repair: Shaky steering wheel, 1992 chevy lumina, tie rod ends

Question
I have a 1992 Chevy Lumina with 169,000 miles. The car has been in excellent running condition. The steering wheel started shaking about two weeks ago. It started as a slight shake and now it has become a little worse. It shakes the worst between 30 and 55 mph and basically goes away above 65 mph. My first thought was to balance and check tie rod ends but I've never seen it where is shook at these speeds only. Do have any suggestions?

Thank You

Answer
Hello Jared,
I'm not sure of the oscillation pattern as your description is vague. If the tires are in good condition and the balance is not off, I would suspect a wheel bearing. A balance problem will not go away at speed. A bearing problem will diminish at faster speed. Another thing to check is the front half shafts.

I hope that helps.
Have a great day!
